I’ve never really been the person who was cool with bugs or didn’t really care about getting mud on themselves, and nobody has every described me as woodsy or one with nature. Taking all of this into account, this Summer I signed up to be a camp counselor for 7 weeks. That means living in a cabin, working outside all day, leading hikes, and becoming one with the lake. My family was a little surprised when I told them I’d applied for this, because I had gone to camp when I was little and decided it wasn’t for me, but this Summer I was determined to prove everyone wrong.
I didn’t know how much I really would love being outside until I got to camp. I love being able to work outside all day, hear the wind, and see the stars. I think that might be my favorite part, seeing the stars. In cities you can never look up and see all the constellations because of the light pollution. I for one, never realized how much being outside can recharge you. I definitely have a new appreciation for nature, and I’m proud to say that even when a freaky looking bug lands on me or I have to scrub algae off a pylon I’ve learned that it’s really not that big of a deal. I really hope to continue being able to enjoy nature, at least for a little bit everyday, when I go back home, and I encourage you to as well! Studies have shown that it can help with stress relief, improve short term memory, and restore mental energy, and we all know most of us are in need of that… So go out and, I don’t know, hug a tree?!Remember to subscribe!
