Lisbon, Portugal

It’s another travel post! I do have other ideas than just simply telling you about where I’ve been traveling, but Lisbon was such a beautiful place and these pictures deserve to see the light of day.

My roommates and I went to Lisbon in September, and it was one of our more adventurous trips, as we went surfing on the coast. We used a company called Epic Surf School, and they were fantastic. They picked us up at a point near our hostel and drove us all the way to the beach. After we got to the beach, they gave us some wetsuits and we hit the waves like complete naturals! I’m totally kidding. None of us knew how to surf, and one of my roommates actually had to go the emergency room back in Rome due to a piece of sand stuck in her eye… Regardless, it really was incredibly fun, despite our complete lack of knowledge.

The surf instructors did a really good job about setting us up with waves, teaching us how to stand up, and helping us get over the huge waves, and believe me the waves were enormous. In fact, the surf instructors told us that the waves, which were reaching about 8 feet, were a little less than ideal which, although was unsettling to hear at first, was comforting knowing that the waves were difficult for everyone and I wasn’t the only one swallowing buckets of salt water. Despite the waves being a little large, it was refreshing to be in the water with my friends and cheering each other on while we tried to stand up on our boards. We were the first ones in the water and the last ones out, and surfing school has remained one of my favorite memories from my time abroad.

Outside of our water activities, we had a great time wandering around the city and eating some of the best food I’ve had in my life. If you go, you’ve got to try the barbecued meat. It’s so perfectly cooked, and they season it with salsa verde and fresh citrus. It is definitely a must try if you eat meat.

I’m looking forward to the next time I can go to Lisbon, and I hope next time I’ll be able to stay a little longer!
